Find Out If You Need a UK ETA Before You Go
The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is being rolled out in phases, starting with select countries and expanding over time. If you're from one of the eligible nations, you’ll need to apply for an ETA before traveling to the United Kingdom—even if you don’t normally need a visa.
The program first launched on November 15, 2023, for travelers from Qatar. It then extended to UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, and Jordan—with ETA applications open from February 1, 2024, for trips starting February 22, 2024.
The most recent major update came on March 5, 2025, when 34 European countries, including EU member states, were added. From April 2, 2025, citizens of these countries must now have a valid ETA to enter the UK.

Start Your ApplicationIf you're not eligible for an ETA, here’s what you can do instead,
Not everybody heading to the UK is eligible to get an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Depending on your nationality or immigration status, you may be exempt—or you might need a visa instead. Here’s a quick guide to who doesn’t need to apply for an ETA:
Citizens of Visa-Exempt Countries (Not Yet Part of the ETA Scheme)
If your country is visa-exempt and hasn’t been included in the ETA rollout yet, you can still travel to the UK without applying for one.
UK Visa Holders & Legal Residents
Already have a valid UK visa or official permission to live, work, or study in the UK? You’re all set—no ETA is needed.
British and Irish Passport Holders
If you hold a British or Irish passport, you’re automatically exempt from the ETA requirement.
Travelers from the Common Travel Area
If you’re coming from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man—and you live there legally—you don’t need an ETA to enter the UK.

Visa Holders and UK Residents, Citizens
Individuals who already hold a UK visa or have permission to live, work, or study in the UK are exempt.

Irish Residents and Citizens
Non-Irish citizens who are legally resident in the Republic of Ireland and travelling from within the Common Travel Area (which includes Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, and the Isle of Man) do not require an ETA.

UK ETA Perks:
What’s Included
Got your UK ETA? Awesome! That means you're cleared for takeoff—almost. With your ETA, you can visit the UK for short stays and soak up everything from historic landmarks to lively city scenes. But before you pack your bags, here’s a quick look at what your ETA actually allows:
Tourism & Sightseeing – Explore iconic spots like Big Ben, Stonehenge, or the Scottish Highlands.
Family & Friends Visits – Reunite with loved ones or catch up with friends living in the UK.
Business Trips – Attend meetings, events, or conferences (just no long-term work).
Short Courses – Thinking of a short workshop or class? Go for it, as long as it’s under six months.
Just remember—while the UK ETA makes visiting easy, it’s not a work visa or a green light for permanent stays. Stick to short visits, follow the rules, and you’re good to go!
While the UK ETA accommodates various travel activities, it’s important to note that for other purposes not specifically mentioned here, travelers, including those eligible based on their nationality, may require a different relevant visa type.
